A consciousness-technology app that uses your phone's flashlight and precisely timed flickering light through closed eyelids to create immersive, kaleidoscopic phosphene journeys. Requires explicit photosensitivity screening and consent before use.
ℹ️Experience Information
About the experience
Get yourself comfortable, turn your phone so the flashlight is facing you, close your eyes then fall effortlessly into a calming and immersive journey through a constantly shifting kaleidoscope of colours created by your subconscious…
🌀 Context Engineering Tips:
- Set & Setting: Lie down comfortably in a dimmed, quiet space with the phone charged or plugged in, and set aside 5–15 uninterrupted minutes. Despite the simple setup, this is a concentrated, active perceptual journey.
- Physical Positioning: Start with the phone 6–12 inches from gently closed (not squeezed) eyes and adjust to your sweet spot. Lying down prevents arm fatigue and allows deeper relaxation.
- What You'll Experience: The flashing light stimulates phosphenes — geometric patterns, colours, tunnels, and spirals generated by your own visual system. Let them flow and transform rather than trying to hold them.
- Working with Intensity: If it feels overwhelming, increase the distance, point the light away, or open your eyes — you can stop anytime. If under-stimulated, darken the room, relax your eyelids, and bring the phone slightly closer.
- Safety & Contraindications: Do not use with any history of photosensitive epilepsy or seizures. Take care with migraines, recent eye surgery, or eye conditions, and avoid when very tired, intoxicated, or unwell.
- Integration & Reflection: Afterwards, expect 15–30 minutes of heightened colour perception or visual freshness. Take a moment to reflect on the patterns, emotions, and shifts in perception you noticed.

Extra consent & screening
Before starting, say:
“Lumenate Nova uses rapidly flickering light from the eyemask directed toward your closed eyes. It can create strong colours, patterns, and altered visual sensations. You can stop immediately at any time. Do you understand this and actively consent to continue?”
Do not proceed if the guest:
- Has a history of seizures or photosensitive epilepsy.
- Is uncertain about photosensitivity or cannot give clear consent.
- Reports a current migraine, strong migraine warning signs, recent eye surgery, or a relevant eye condition.
- Is extremely tired, intoxicated, unwell, or unable to follow the stop instructions.
Before the guest arrives
- Charge the eyemask or connect it safely to power; clean the flashlight lens and enable Do Not Disturb.
- Confirm the app opens, audio works, and a short calming session is ready.
- Prepare a clean mat or cushion in a dim area. Keep charging cables away from walking paths.
- Set brightness high enough for the effect, but begin with the phone farther from the guest.
How to facilitate
- Frame — Explain that the Nove eyemask supplies the light while the guest’s own visual system generates the colours and patterns.
- Consent — Complete the extra screening and receive explicit agreement before activating the session.
- Position — Invite the guest to lie down. Begin with the phone approximately 6–12 inches from gently closed eyes.
- Orient — Tell the guest to say “stop,” raise a hand, open their eyes, or turn away at any moment. Never pressure them to complete the session.
- During — Stay present. Watch for tension, distress, sudden movement, headache, nausea, or requests to reduce intensity. Increase the phone distance immediately if needed.
- Close — Point the light away and stop the session before inviting the guest to open their eyes. Allow visual after-effects to settle before sitting or standing.
- Integrate — Ask: “What colours, patterns, or changes in attention did you notice?”
Troubleshooting
- Weak or no patterns → darken the area, relax eyelids, increase brightness, or move the phone slightly closer while preserving comfort.
- Too intense → increase distance immediately; point the light away and let the guest open their eyes.
- Notification or interruption → pause, re-enable Do Not Disturb, and restart only with renewed agreement.
- Battery draining → use an approved power bank or plugged-in phone with the cable secured.
- App freezes → close and relaunch the app; swap phones if needed.
- Any safety uncertainty → do not continue; escalate to Jose or Tirso.
